HallrunnerThis is a silly shared storytelling game. It's good for camping trips and the like. All you need is paper and pencils. I got the idea from the Hallrunner flash game created by Videlectrix (a fictional company related to the Homestar Runner series of web cartoons). The players are "hallrunners" who are running through a seemingly endless hallway. Along the way, they encounter things that they have to react to. Players take turns as the "hallmaster". The hallmaster decides what the other players will encounter this round, and secretly writes this down. The encounter can be anything: A person, animal, place, object, event, abstract concept, etc. At the same time, the other players secretly write down how they deal with the encounter... without knowing what the encounter is, yet! Once everyone is finished writing, the hallmaster reveals the encounter. Then, one at a time, each player reads what they wrote. Their responses will often be inappropriate or absurd in the context of the encounter, which is part of the fun. The hallmaster then describes how the encounter plays out. The hallmaster can allow the player to elaborate on their response if they want, or allow the other players to discuss and weigh in, but the hallmaster has the final say on what happens. The hallmaster then awards points to each player based on how well they handled the encounter. The points don't matter, but if you want, you can use the following scale...
After points are awarded, the next player becomes the hallmaster and comes up with a new encounter. Continue playing until you get sick of it. |
